Big distros handle this by setting up udev rules according to a fixed name scheme. This avoids possible name changing of network interfaces with each boot process. Eth0 can for example become Eth4 if they both are of the same type and use the same driver.

In the worst case this could lead to the router becoming randomly unaccessible after a reboot. If your router is far away this is a big problem...
